1. What is the effect of nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher in the soil?
Nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher durable increases the disposable water capacity soils and substratum by minimizing the loss of water and nutrients caused by infiltrations, evaporation and surface run-offs.
Within the soil, nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher – granules swell and form gel particles and store water and nutrients solved in this water. Water and nutrients are released continuously and completely to the plant. supports the capillary water movement towards the roots. Due to the resulting humidity gradients between soil layers with and without nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher a water transfer from nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher to the surrounding soil is induced. 2. Which amount of water can be stored by nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher?
1 kg nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher is able to store up to 250 litres of distilled water. Salts and ions in the soil or in the rainwater are depleting the water uptake of all hydro-gels under real conditions. In the soil, hydro-gels absorb salts and multivalent ions such as magnesium and calcium. Because the ions act as additional cross-linking agents, the polymer net becomes more close-meshed, leading to a decreased absorption capacity of the hydro-gels. Within the soil, 1 kg nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher absorbs about 150 litres soil solution. nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher hydro-gels reach their maximum absorption capacity even under the natural burden of the soil, the substratum ort he compost. For an input depth of 20 cm, 1 kg nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher still stores about 100 litres of soil solution.
3. How does nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher influence the soil humidity?
If applying nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher, water and nutrients solved in the water are stored in the coarse pores against gravity. Water, which normally drains away, now is available to the plant. Thus the available amount of water for the plant in the soil is increased. By the application of 3 g nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher per litre soil, the available amount of water is increased by 30 – 50 %. Thus, the time period until reaching the permanent wilting point under normal growth conditions is doubled. The properties of a sandy soil treated with nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher are, concerning the water capacity and the amount of water available, can be compared to those of a loamy ground.
4. Might nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher cause water logging?
If applied properly, the addition of nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher does not cause a water logging of the soil or substratum. Due to the swelling and shrinking of the hydro-gels, stable voids are created in the soil. This loose structure of the soil is persistent. The water permeability is always warranted.
Water logging is caused by stagnant moisture in the surrounding of the roots. Stagnant moisture is the result of soil compaction in combination with insufficient water permeability. nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher is increasing the pore volume of the soil, inhibiting the soil compaction. The soil is bulked. When nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher reaches ist maximum absorption capacity, no additional water is stored. Excess water is drained. The remaining coarse pores guarantee a very good ventilation and oxygen supply of the upper soil.
5. Which effects has nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher on physical properties of soils, substratum and compost?
By the swelling of the hydro-gels upon uptake of water, a change in volume is caused in the soil leading to a decrease of the soil density and an increase of the pore volume. This results in a loosening of the treated soil. An easier and more intensive rooting is provided. The soil density of sandy soil is decreased by 23,4% upon treatment with nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher compared to the untreated soil. The increase of the pore volume is 40,5% compared to the untreated soil (3 g nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher per litre soil). Nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher thus reduces soil compaction and simultaneously increases the water permeability of the soil. By this loosening effect of nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher water can infiltrate into the soil more quickly. The increased infiltration speed results in a significant reduction of surface runoff. Soil erosion is decreased by 50%.
6. How long are the effects of nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher lasting in the soil?
Nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher keeps its ability for repeated water accumulation and release over a time period of several years. The application of nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher as a reservoir for water and nutrients, has its
highest cost-effectiveness in applications, where a long-term maintenance is desired, e.g. in tree or shrub plantings, orchards, tree nurseries, perennial cultivations (alfalfa, sugarcane…).
7. Is nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher environmental friendly?
Nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher is biocompatible and safe for the environment.
Extensive ecotoxicologic tests concerning the environmental compatibility of nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher gave no evidence for any harmful effect of the product on animals, plants, soil or ground waters.
8. Is nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher degradable?
Nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher is potentially biodegradable. Due to its molecule size and its insolubility, in general nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher is, similar to the biological polymer lignin, can’t be accumulated by microorganisms. However, nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher is integrated in existing natural degradation processes. By physical, chemical and biological activities within the soil the polymer is fluidized. While the low-molecular parts are mineralized, the higher-molecular part is fixed in the mould by agglomeration. Thus, nanoproofed® Wasserspeicher in the course of time becomes an inherent part of the mould fraction, just like natural humic substances, without having any negative effects on the soil as a matter of nature.
